FMSD 4 Year Old (4K) Program

Four-Year-Old Half Day Program

The Fort Mill Schools provides a half-day, 4-year old program (4K) for qualifying students. Each class is taught by a certified early childhood teacher and a teacher assistant. The classes are housed at Riverview and Fort Mill Elementary Schools.

The 4K class provides many experiences in motor, language, and concept development. There is much opportunity for music and movement, art expression, reading, and learning through play centers and group times. The Handwriting Without Tears curriculum is used for beginning handwriting. Beginning 2018-19 school year, the Big Day for PreK (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) curriculum will also be used. There is no fee for the program and a snack is provided. Bus transportation is available. The 4K class runs five days a week with a morning and afternoon session of approximately 3 hours each. Twenty children are enrolled in each class.

Children must live in the Fort Mill School District and be four years old on or before Sept. 1 to apply for the program. All children will be screened for motor skills, concept, and language development. Hearing and vision will also be screened. Parents will fill out family information. From this screening, children are selected for our half day four year old program. Space in the 4K classes is limited so the children who demonstrate the most need are given first priority for class placement. There are other preschool classes in the district for children with an identified special need and IEP.

There are also two full day four year old classes which serve as lab schools for Fort Mill High School and Nation Ford High School early childhood education students. This program has a monthly tuition cost (comparable to most childcare centers) and priority is given to Fort Mill School District employees. Holli Pinski at is the contact for that program.

The 4 year old screening will take place March 15 and 16, 2018 at Riverview Elementary School 1300 Spratt Street. Parents should sign up for an appointment by clicking here.

Parents should bring their child, child’s birth certificate, immunization record, and a proof of residency to the screening.
