The Fort Mill School District (FMSD) held its annual Spelling Bee contest on Thursday, January 12, 2017 in the district’s boardroom. It was standing room only as family members and school administrators packed the room as they supported, watched, and listened to thirty-five middle school students spell words most adults would find difficult to spell in their own right.  After three hours of spelling, two Gold Hill Middle School students, Kate Miller and Stuti Bansal, remained and continued to vie for the chance to spell the championship word.  Several back and forth rounds ensued between the two students, with Miller advancing to the championship round after spelling “cadenza” and then the championship word, “misanthropy,” correctly.

“In the three years I’ve announced the words, we’ve never gone 26 rounds – it’s a record,” noted Gina Jenkins, Coordinator of Educator Effectiveness with the FMSD. Jenkins congratulated all students for their poise and willingness to publicly spell such difficult words, many of which are not part of everyday conversations.

Miller will represent the Fort Mill School District at the 2017 Charlotte Observer Regional Spelling Bee in February 2017. Winners of the Regional Bee will have the opportunity to compete with students from other states at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC later in the year.
