At the school board meeting held Tuesday, September 5, the district announced the selection of the 2017–2018 Teacher of the Year and Support Staff Employee of the Year.

Fort Mill High School Visual Art Teacher Jessica Calloway was selected as the 2017–2018 Teacher of the Year. She has been teaching for 12 years and is National Board Certified. She has helped lead multiple projects at Fort Mill High School, including the Beautiful Hands project that paired Riverview Elementary School kindergartners with high school art students and teacher cadets.

Calloway organized “Dot Day,” a collaborative project between the K-4 Learning Lab and her Drawing I class. Multiple murals around Fort Mill High School have had Ms. Calloway’s influence, including the Old Yellow Jacket Mosaic and the Fort Mill High baseball murals.

“Through art and the creative process, I am able to teach students they have a voice and a choice to be a positive light in the world,” said Calloway.

Pleasant Knoll Middle School Nurse JoAnne Young was selected as the 2017–2018 Support Staff Employee of the Year. Young served as school nurse at Springfield Middle School last year before moving to the new Pleasant Knoll Middle School. She provides direct care to students and staff, performs screenings and referrals, along with promoting a healthy school environment. She has served on school health and safety committees and serves on the district health advisory committee.

“I am truly honored and blessed to have the opportunity to represent the district as the Support Staff Employee of the Year,” said Young.

Calloway and Young will serve in their respective roles for the 2017–2018 school year. Calloway will move on to represent the Fort Mill School District in the State Teacher of the Year program.

“We are very proud of all the outstanding candidates for these two honors,” said Superintendent Dr. Chuck Epps. “Jessica and JoAnne are excellent examples of the great educators and employees we have in Fort Mill.”
