Posted on 03/20/2019

At the board work session held Tuesday, March 19, the Fort Mill School Board of Trustees approved the administration’s recommendation for names and mascots for Elementary #10, #11 and Middle School #6. The selection process included a committee of students, staff, community members and historians. The committee selected three names and mascots for each school that the administration then used to select the final recommendation. The administration used criteria such as historical significance, school location, indigenous animals and uniqueness to select the final recommendation presented to the board.

The approved names and mascots are:

Elementary #10     Kings Town Elementary School  Knights

Elementary #11     River Trail Elementary School    Otters

Middle #6             Forest Creek Middle School        Coyotes

Kings Town Elementary is located off of Mason’s Bend Road. The name has historical ties to King Hagler, the Catawba Chieftain that once lived in the Fort Mill area in the 1700s.

River Trail Elementary is located south of the Catawba Ridge High School site on the Fort Mill Southern Bypass. The name and mascot reference the natural features, multiple trails in the area and the local river otter.

Forest Creek Middle School is located on Whites Road adjacent to the Catawba Ridge High School site. The name and mascot also reference the natural features of the area and the local coyote.

The two elementary schools are scheduled to open for the 2020–2021 school year and Forest Creek Middle School is scheduled to open for the 2021–2022 school year.
