2020-2021 Bus Transportation
The 2020-2021 school year will require significant changes to keep students and teachers safe. This starts in the morning and ends in the afternoon when students ride the bus to and from school. Per the guidelines released by the South Carolina Department of Education, ridership will be a maximum of 50% of standard capacity; buses will be loaded back to front; roof vents and windows will be opened to maximize ventilation; students and drivers will be expected to wear masks.

Bus Route Information will be available Aug. 21.

Bus Transportation Options
To minimize the need for double or triple routing of buses causing very long transport times, the District is encouraging parents to provide student transportation, if possible. Additionally, in accordance with state guidelines and regulations, the District has identified certain areas that will be non-transport zones. The district has previously provided transport in these areas in opposition to state regulations and will no longer be able to provide this service. Students living in these non-transport zones, which are located within a mile and a half of a student’s assigned school and offer a safe walking option, will not have an option to select to ride the bus. The District understands the challenges this may cause for families within these zones, but feels this step is necessary to limit bus capacity and provide safe and healthy transport for students. A full listing of non-transport zones can be found here.

Bus Transportation Request/Timeline
Parents with transportation changes or requests, please contact the Transportation Department at transportation@fortmillschools.org).

Bus routes, once developed, will be frozen until September 30, 2020, at which time transportation changes and requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis and subject to space.

Bus Safety and Sanitization
Students who use bus transportation can expect clean and sanitized buses. Each bus will be cleaned and disinfected using a spray mister machine with an EPA approved disinfectant twice per day following the completion of morning and afternoon routes. Additionally, bus drivers will be wiping down high touch surfaces regularly. Bus routes will be developed to comply with capacity recommendations, however, the District will never leave a student at a bus stop. Any over-capacity issues on individual routes will be addressed in an expedited manner.
