Overview of Safety and Security

The Fort Mill School District places the highest priority on maintaining a safe, secure, and orderly educational environment that promotes student growth, learning, and achievement.  The district’s leadership and personnel are fully committed to safe schools.

While not all security efforts can be made public, below are some measures in place throughout the district:

  • School resource officers, school security officers, and staff members provide supervision throughout the day.
  • Access to school facilities is strictly controlled.  Visitor entry is permitted only through the main office, and all other exterior doors remain locked.
  • Visitors with business beyond the front office are required to present photo identification and be screened through national and state sex offender registries.
  • Each school has video surveillance and radio communication systems, and each classroom is equipped with the capability to notify school administrators in the event of an emergency.
  • The district and each school have in place emergency response plans that are regularly reviewed and updated.  Staff members are trained in emergency response protocols, and students and staff members participate in emergency drills throughout the school year.
  • Volunteers who may come into contact with students are required to complete a background check and be approved by the school principal before serving.
  • The district closely coordinates with public safety agencies and other community stakeholders to prevent and respond to disruptive incidents.  The district’s safety and security protocols are continually assessed and refined as needed to ensure maximum effectiveness.
  • The district encourages reporting of threats and other concerns to district personnel, the police, or through the York County Crime Stoppers program.  Threat assessment protocols are in place, and all threats are fully investigated by the district and law enforcement personnel.
  • The district strives to stay abreast of current and emerging trends that may increase the risk of harm to our students or disruption to our schools.
