Delaying Kindergarten - FAQs
In South Carolina, children who turn five on or before September 1 are eligible for and required to attend kindergarten. Families may choose to delay enrollment by completing the state waiver form; however, if they do so, the child will be placed in first grade the following year at age six by default.
For families who feel kindergarten is still the most appropriate placement at age six, a formal request may be submitted during the child’s eligible kindergarten year. These requests are reviewed case-by-case and may include supporting documentation such as teacher input or developmental information. If a child has already started kindergarten in another state, that placement will be honored.
For families with concerns about development, early screening and evaluation are available, and eligible children may receive support through an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Many children are successful in kindergarten with these supports in place. Families are encouraged to consider the whole child and reach out to the district for guidance, forms, or next steps.
