21-22 District TOY and SSOY Announcement

At the school board meeting held Tuesday, September 8, the district announced the selection of the 2021-2022 District Teacher of the Year and Support Staff Employee of the Year.

Laura Merk Sixth Grade Math Teacher at Springfield Middle School, was selected as the 2021-2022 Teacher of the Year. Merk holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education w/ Early Childhood from Anderson University and a Master of Education in Learning and Technology from Western Governors University. She began her teaching career in the district in 2015 at Springfield Middle School as a science teacher before transitioning to her current position as a math teacher in 2017. Merk has served as a Fort Mill Mentor Teacher, a Winthrop University Mentor Teacher and is a STEAM Teacher Leader in the district.

“I value learning as a whole experience and know that collaborating with students, families, and the surrounding stakeholders is pivotal for fostering a strong community inside and outside of the classroom,” said Laura Merk. “I believe teaching is about providing experiences for students to make connections with learning. Learning needs to be interesting, engaging, and relevant so that students are inspired to be life-long learners.”

Suzanne McLelland School Nurse at Riverview Elementary School, was selected as the 2021–2022 District Support Staff Employee of the Year. McLelland has been employed with Fort Mill Schools since October 2002 as the School Nurse at Riverview Elementary School. Her colleagues describe her as a professional nurse with an outgoing personality, high energy, and never say “no” attitude when it comes to helping children. Her genuine concern for others is evident in her nursing style. McLelland is also described as caring, compassionate, and can always be counted on to “do the right thing.”  Her colleagues respect her and appreciate her professional and collaborative style as a colleague.

“We are excited to present these awards to both Mrs. Merk and Mrs. McLelland,” said Superintendent Chuck Epps. “Both of these outstanding honorees have an extraordinary commitment to our students and exemplify the district’s motto of Children First…Every Day. We are proud to have them represent our district in the coming year.”
