UPDATE: July 22, 2020

Following a review of the Return to School Plan, the District remains committed to the plan previously announced with one adjustment at the elementary school level.

Elementary School Adjustment: Students will return to class following the Family Model with an A/B Model Schedule for the first four weeks of school (August 31–September 25).

Superintendent Dr. Chuck Epps presented the Return to School Plan during public session at the school board meeting held Tuesday, July 21. The meeting can be viewed on the district's Youtube page.

As part of the review, the administration recommended an adjusted 2020–2021 School Calendar to allow more planning and preparation time for the return to school. The school board approved the calendar which is located on the district website. The district has created separate versions of the calendar for each school level (elementary, middle, high) based on the learning models. These calendar versions are now posted to the District Calendar website

The Return to School Guide, along with the information, below has been updated to reflect the current Return to School Plan. We encourage everyone to review the guide for more detail.

UPDATE: July 15, 2020

Today Governor Henry McMaster announced new recommendations for the state regarding the return to school for the 2020–2021 school year. The recommendations include providing only two options to parents to choose from for instruction. The options are:

1: A full return of students to face-to-face learning, five days a week.
2: A fully virtual option for those that choose not to return to face-to-face learning (Fort Mill Virtual Academy).

While this has not been mandated, Governor McMaster stated he instructed the South Carolina Department of Education to reject any plan that does not include a full face-to-face return for students. This has forced the district to re-evaluate our plan under these new guidelines. We will be sharing more information with parents and staff as we get further clarification from the State Department of Education.

Along with the recommendation for school option, Governor McMaster also recommended that schools delay opening until September 8, 2020. As such, we will now re-evaluate the school calendar and will share any changes to the calendar as soon as they are determined.

We understand our parents and staff have begun preparing for a return to school under the recent plan released by the district and that this new uncertainty will cause more stress and anxiety for everyone. We will work quickly to notify our parents and staff of any changes as soon as they are determined.

Thank you for your patience as we work through this new information.

Faced with the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Fort Mill School District has worked diligently to create a Return to School Plan for the 2020-2021 academic year.

In this process, the health, safety and well-being of our students, families, teachers, staff and community members, was of the highest priority. Additionally, we evaluated the resources and strategies we could employ to continue to provide the quality education to our students and families our district is known for.
