Updated DHEC Guidance 01/04/22
Updated DHEC Guidance 01/04/22
Posted on 01/04/2022

During the holiday break the CDC announced new information regarding COVID-19 isolation and quarantine protocols. Based on this new information, DHEC has now updated the School Exclusion List for isolation and quarantine protocols related to COVID-19.

The district carefully adheres to state and federal law, including the current protocols established by DHEC. Under South Carolina law, school districts are required to follow the DHEC's School Exclusion List, which establishes protocols for infected individuals and those who are determined to be close contacts as defined by SC DHEC's COVID-19 Guidance for K-12 Schools. Neither the school board nor the district administration has the authority to disregard or modify DHEC protocols for any illness included in the School Exclusion List.

Please take a moment review this information.

Student or Staff Positive Test

Positive viral test result (PCR or antigen) criteria for return:

  • - Isolated for at least 5 days since symptoms started.
  • - Masks must be worn days 6-10.
  • - Asymptomatic students or staff with a positive viral test are required to be excluded from school until 5 days after specimen collection.
  • - Documentation for Return: at the completion of 5 days of isolation after the start of symptoms, provide a parent’s note that symptoms have improved and there has been no fever in the past 24 hours (without using fever-reducing medication). Parents can submit the note via the google form link provided with your student’s COVID-19 information letter.

Close/Household Contacts

  • - If you are vaccinated**, you do not have to quarantine.
  • - If you are not vaccinated**, you must quarantine for a minimum of 5 days.
    • -Quarantine can end after Day 5 if a viral test is negative AND if no symptoms were present during the quarantine period. The viral test (PCR or antigen; home tests will not be accepted) must be collected no sooner than day 4, and quarantine cannot be discontinued earlier than completion of day 5.
  • - DHEC requires anyone who has had a close-contact exposure to someone positive with COVID-19 to wear a mask through Day 10 and recommends you get tested on Day 5, regardless of vaccination status.

**If a close contact has received all of the vaccine doses they're eligible for (completed initial vaccination series and booster for those eligible by age and time since initial series - see CDC website for most up-to-date information on booster eligibility) or are verified (positive PCR or antigen test, not antibody test) to have been infected with COVID-19 in the previous 90 days, they do not have to quarantine for any length of time.

It is important to report any positive test results to the district as soon as possible to help slow the spread of COVID-19. Below are links to report student or staff positive test results. Please complete these forms once you or your students receive a positive COVID-19 test result.

Along with these changes, the district will continue the current mitigation strategies in our facilities which include but are not limited to the following:

  • -Masks are highly encouraged for students and staff in school building and facilities.
  • -Masks are required on school buses under federal mandate. Students will be offered a mask if they do not have one when boarding a bus. Students will not be denied transportation or left in an unsafe situation for refusal to wear a mask.
  • -Limited visitors or volunteers allowed in school buildings.
  • -Contact tracing.
  • -Three feet social distancing where possible.
  • -Encouraging personal hygiene practices such as frequent hand washing.
  • -Extensive cleaning of school facilities and buses.

The district continues to offer COVID-19 testing for students and staff. More information regarding the testing site and times is available on the district’s website.

The district is also working with our healthcare partners to provide another COVID-19 vaccine clinic. Details regarding the clinic will be provided once they are finalized.

Thank you for your patience as we implement these new protocols. Any further changes to the protocols or our district mitigation strategies will be announced once they are determined.
